Australia’s Social Media Rules: What They Mean for Under-16s

Australia has taken a significant step towards protecting children online.

Since 10 December 2025, age-restricted social media platforms have been required to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under 16 from creating or keeping an account. Platforms currently identified by eSafety include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, Threads, Twitch, X and Kick, with the list subject to change.

The rules are designed to reduce children's exposure to harmful online experiences and platform features that can negatively affect their wellbeing.

But the conversation doesn't end at age 16.

Children can still encounter online content without having an account, and many other digital services remain available to under-16s. This means that privacy, digital literacy, safe technology use and responsible sharing of children's information remain important well beyond social media accounts.

At ElenAI, we believe protecting children in the AI era requires more than restricting access.

It requires helping parents, educators, community organisations and children themselves understand how technology collects, uses, shares and transforms information — including children's photos and personal data.

🌱 The goal is not to keep children away from technology.
The goal is to help create a digital world where children can grow, learn and participate safely.

This is why conversations about children's privacy and AI safety matter now more than ever.
